Native to China, New Zealand adopted the fruit and rebranded it, and here in Gisborne we grow some of the tastiest kiwifruit in the country. Thanks to our ideal growing climate, Gisborne is recognised for producing top-quality fruit with an early season, which means our delicious greens and golds are the first to market.
Green kiwifruit (Hayward)
Our green Hayward kiwifruit is packed full of vitamins C (three times more than an orange), E and A, potassium, antioxidants and fibre. Tangy and sweet-flavoured, the green kiwifruit has fuzzy brown skin and a bright verdant green interior flecked with tiny black seeds.
Gold kiwifruit (SunGold)
Possessing the same nutritional benefits of green, the gold kiwifruit has a sweeter, more aromatic, subtle, tropical taste, with smooth golden skin and vibrant yellow interior.
Delicious scooped straight from the skin, kiwifruit is also ideal for smoothies, sorbet, salsas, dessert toppings and fruit salads.
Kiwifruit can be kept in the fridge for a couple of weeks. To slow down the ripening process, keep it away from other fruit, but if speeding up ripening, store at room temperature in a paper bag with apples, oranges, bananas or pears, out of direct sunlight.
A perfectly ripe kiwifruit is firm but will yield to slight pressure much like an avocado or peach. Both green and gold increase in sweetness as they ripen.
Available between May and September.
