Storage & Ripening

Avocados are delicious, creamy and oh-so healthy, but knowing when to enjoy them at their peak ripeness can be a fine science. 

Identifying a ripe avocado:

Will yield slightly when gently squeezed, but not feel mushy or squishy (tip, squeeze with your entire hand not just your fingertips, to avoid bruising.)

Green-skin varieties will not change colour when ripe.

Check the brown stem on your avocado - if it comes away easily, you are good to go.

Storage tips:

An unripe avocado won’t ripen further in the fridge, so make sure you keep it on your countertop or fruit bowl until it is ready to eat. Keep it out of the heat and direct sunlight.

To speed up the ripening process, store avocados in a paper bag at room temperature. For extra speed, add a banana or apple to the paper bag - the more apples you add, the faster your avocado will ripen!

A ripe avocado that is ready to eat should be stored in the refrigerator, where it should last another two or three days. 

Cut avocados will brown rapidly. To prevent this, sprinkle the exposed flesh with lemon or lime juice and store it in the fridge, either wrapped tightly or kept in an airtight container. This should give you an extra day.

Overrun with ripe avocados? Mash them up and mix them with lemon juice before freezing in airtight containers for up to six months.

Grown from seed by Rudolph Hass in 1926, this lone tree was nearly chopped down, as Mr Hass was frustrated at its slow growth and inability to produce fruit. Many years later it was the first tree in the US to be patented.
