Storage & Ripening

Avocados are delicious, creamy and healthy, but knowing when to enjoy them at their peak ripeness can be a fine science. 

Identifying a ripe avocado:

It will yield slightly when gently squeezed but not feel mushy or squishy. (To avoid bruising, squeeze with your entire hand, not just your fingertips.)

Green-skin varieties will not change colour when ripe.

Check the brown stem on your avocado - if it comes away easily, you are good to go.

Storage tips:

An unripe avocado will not ripen further in the fridge, so keep it on your countertop or fruit bowl until it is ready to eat. Keep it out of heat and direct sunlight.

Store avocados in a paper bag at room temperature to speed up the ripening process. Add a banana or apple to the bag for extra speed—the more apples you add, the faster your avocado will ripen!

A ripe avocado, ready to eat, should be stored in the refrigerator for two or three days. 

Cut avocados will brown rapidly. To prevent this, sprinkle the exposed flesh with lemon or lime juice and store it in the fridge, either wrapped tightly or in an airtight container. This should give you an extra day.

If you have an excess of ripe avocados, mix them with lemon juice and freeze them in airtight containers for up to six months.

We use NZ Post for all of our deliveries. We offer overnight delivery to North Island customers and two-day delivery to South Island customers.
