Details

Most people meet a tamarillo once and never forget it. You halve one, run a teaspoon around the inside, and get a spoonful of deep orange flesh that's sharp and sweet at the same time, with seeds that pop like passionfruit.

The trick is knowing when to eat them. A firm tamarillo hasn't hit its peak yet, and that's where most people give up. Give it a few days on the bench until it yields under your thumb and the sharpness drops away into something rounder and sweeter.

A pinch of sugar is the traditional partner, but they've got enough acidity to stand up to rich food too, which is why they make such good chutneys and why a spoonful alongside venison or pork works so well.

One tamarillo carries around 89% of your daily vitamin C. The season is short and the crop is unpredictable, so when they're on, they're worth ordering properly.

Storage

If your tamarillos feel firm, leave them on the bench for a few days to finish ripening. A ripe one gives slightly when you press it, like a ripe plum.

Once they're there, move them to the fridge and they'll hold for up to two weeks.

Overnight delivery to the North Island and Christchurch. Two-day delivery to the rest of the South Island.
Rural deliveries may take an extra day.

Depending on the season and availability, our tamarillos may come from growers in Gisborne or other well-known growing regions around New Zealand.
