Makrut lime leaves have an unmistakable flavour and fragrance, which is loosely described as a blend of lemon, lime, and mandarin. Once you start using them you won’t be able to stop!

Makrut limes are very different to regular limes. Rather unattractive to look at, with a bumpy surface and extremely bitter taste, these limes are not commonly consumed. It’s the leaves that are the star of this plant, and are widely used to add incredible depth to Asian dishes.
Native to Indonesia and used throughout Southeast Asia, they have an unmistakable flavour and fragrance, which is loosely described as a blend of lemon, lime, and mandarin. So unique is their taste, chefs say if you can’t find them to use in a dish, don’t even bother attempting to replace them with something else, you won’t even come close to replicating it!
Makrut limes and their leaves contain vitamin c, citronellol, limonene, and antioxidants that have a number of health benefits. The oil, for example, is known to help detoxify the blood and liver, and the leaves, juice, and rind are reported to have many other medicinal benefits.
You will receive your Makrut lime leaves in a compostable zip lock bag.
Fresh is best with these leaves. But they will last well in the fridge for around 2 weeks in an airtight container in your crisper draw.
They also freeze fantastically, with their flavour lasting exceptionally well for up to a year. Just pop the zip lock bag in the freezer and use the leaves as you need them.
If you use frozen leaves, run them under hot water for a few seconds to thaw them and release their mouth-watering aromas.
The leaves and rinds of the Makrut limes can be rubbed directly onto your gums to get rid of any nasty bacteria in your mouth.
Added to a lotion, Makrut lime juice or oil makes a great natural insect repellent.
The leaves, juice, or extracted oil can be applied topically to relieve the pain caused by inflammation, arthritis and gout.
Essential oils crafted from Makrut limes are used to make perfumes.
If you have a few extra leaves sitting around the kitchen, toss a couple into a hot bath and luxuriate in their rich, rejuvenating citrus essence. The properties of this intoxicating aroma will help calm the mind when inhaled, reducing stress and anxiety.
