Details

Gold kiwifruit was developed in New Zealand in the 1990s and is now one of the country's most loved fruit exports.

While the green kiwifruit is known for its bold, tangy flavour, gold kiwifruit takes things in a sweeter, more tropical direction - less acidic, softer in texture, and with a vibrant golden-yellow flesh that looks as good as it tastes. The skin is smoother too, with far less fuzz than its green cousin.

Nutritionally, gold kiwifruit punches well above its weight - it contains three times the vitamin C of an orange, along with folate, potassium, fibre and antioxidants.

Perfect eaten straight with a spoon, sliced over yoghurt or porridge, or added to a fruit platter - gold kiwifruit is the variety that converts people who thought they didn't like kiwifruit.

Approximately 10 kiwifruit per kilogram, depending on size and season.

Storage

Gold kiwifruit is usually close to ready to eat when it arrives.

Check for ripeness by giving it a gentle squeeze - it should give slightly, like a ripe avocado.

Once ripe, keep them in the fridge where they'll stay in great condition for up to two weeks.

To speed up ripening, pop them in a bowl alongside apples or bananas at room temperature.
